 ATTENTION!

REGISTRATION NIGHTS

Registration for fall Season is set.  Check the practice schedule below to see what is offered. If you plan on skiing, snowboarding or snowsheing, you must sign up for pre-ski conditions. You will need to come to:

Springfield City Hall, Room 3, 5pm - 6:30pm, Tues. Aug 5th

OR  Hilyard Center  6:00pm -  7:30pm Wed. Aug. 6th

Please make arrangements to come to a registration night.  If you miss it, you will not be able to participate this season. Calling a coach is not registering. If you are ill, you may call the message number: 431.3245.

ATTENTION ALL COACHES

We will be having coaches meetings for ALL coaches immediately following the registration nights.  Please plan on attending one of the registration nights listed above:  Springfield: 6:30-7pm  or  Eugene: 7:30-8pm.

At these meetings, you will receive a calendar of important dates as well as all the information available about the upcoming season.  This is an effort to improve the communication within the program concerning deadlines and policies of the local program and the state office. It is very important that anyone planning on coaching attend one of these meetings.

 Attention Athletes!

Please make sure to let us know when you move.  If we don’t have your new address, you will not receive the newsletter with registration information for the upcoming season. You will miss out!  It’s your responsibility to notify us.

It is also your responsibility to return your medical renewals by the given deadline. There is a deadline from the state office for each season.  If you miss the deadline, you will not be eligible to participate during that season!  Please have your doctor fill out the medical, sign it, and return to us as soon as you get it.

We don’t want you to miss a season!!

 COACHES’ CORNER

Attention Head Coaches!

To ensure the highest quality coaching for our athletes, becoming certified in your sport should be the goal of all coaches.

There will be a training course offered this summer in late July/early August at Willamette University in Salem.  Lodging and transportation costs will be covered for eligible coaches. At this course you can become certified in multiple sports all on the same weekend.  An easy way to cover all your sports at once.

Also, if you haven’t done so, you will need to go to the SOOR website and take the General Orientation and Protective Behaviors online course.  SOI is now requiring both these certifications in order to volunteer with Special Olympics as any type of coach.  Please take 30 minutes out of your day to do this so you can continue to coach.

Owen and I  will be contacting those coaches without this certification to remind them.

How to Sign up:

Your athlete will need to visit his/her doctor to get a Special Olympics medical form signed. Once the signed medical has been returned, your athlete will be on the mailing list and will receive registration information for upcoming seasons as well as the newsletter about other activities happening in the area.

Youth Programs

The Eugene/Springfield area program is looking to recruit new athletes in the 8-21 year age range. We want to expand the opportunities for this age group and allow them to experience all that Special Olympics has to offer. There is no cost to the athletes or their families to participate.  All you as a parent/care-provider/guardian need to do is get your athlete to practices.

2008 WALK FOR THE GOLD

$$ GREAT NEWS $$

The Walk for the Gold® was held on Saturday, August 25th at Alton Baker Park.  We had 14 teams participating this year.

The 2008 Walk for the Gold® will be held on Saturday, August 23rd at Alton Baker Park.  We hope to have even more teams participating this year.

This is our major fundraiser for the year.  Proceeds from this help us maintain the great program we have.

Jody Brooks has graciously volunteered along with a group of women from the Eugene Baptist Church to coordinate the Walk this year.  They are off and running and great things are going to come from their involvement.  Thank you!!

This year we will find a team to challenge Judy Fleisig’s Springfield Greeters team for the Walk Trophy. I know Judy is aiming for a “Three-peat”.

If you are interested in forming a team or walking as an individual, please visit our Walk for the Gold website and sign up.

VOLUNTEERS

If you have an extra hour a week, we are looking for people to help with the running of the program. It doesn’t take much time to make a large difference.

We are in need of volunteers who have specific skills/training in soccer, bowling, or aquatics for our fall season starting in late August.

We are also looking for individuals who would like to volunteer in other capacities within the local program.

If you are such an individual, please contact our Volunteer Manager, Larry Ruhe, at 431.3245 or email him at yeti22206@msn.com
