The Special Olympics Healthy Athletes® program is a global effort within Special Olympics to improve each athlete’s ability to train and compete.  It also refers athletes to local health practitioners when appropriate.

The Healthy Athletes Program:

  • Provides improved access and healthcare for athletes
  • Allows healthcare professionals/medical students to learn about the needs of people with intellectual disabilities
  • Provides an opportunity to collect and analyze data on the health conditions of people with intellectual disabilities
  • Raises public and professional awareness of the healthcare problems that Special Olympics athletes face.

There are currently five Healthy Athletes Programs being offered in Oregon at various events throughout the year.  All of these services are provided at no cost and are staffed by volunteers with an interest and training in the healthcare field.

MedFest

MedFest is a Special Olympics Healthy Athletes® screening program that facilitates the required standard sports physical examination for current and prospective Special Olympics athletes. The physical examinations at MedFest are conducted by volunteer medical professionals and are free to current and prospective athletes. Exams include registration and assessments of medical history, height and weight. blood pressure, cardiovascular, abdominal, musculoskeletal evaluation, and check-out/referral for follow-up care.

Special Olympics - Lions Clubs International Opening Eyes

The mission of Special Olympics – Lions Clubs International Opening Eyes® is to improve the quality of life for the millions of individuals diagnosed with intellectual disabilities by optimizing their vision, eye health and visual skills through quality eye care.

Fit Feet

Through the FitFeet program, athletes receive foot and ankle screening for deformities and are checked for proper shoes and socks. Athletes also receive information providing guidance on general foot, toenail and skin care.

Fun Fitness

FUNfitness is the comprehensive physical therapy component of the Special Olympics Healthy Athletes® initiative. FUNfitness is designed to assess and improve flexibility, functional strength and balance, educate participants, families and coaches about the importance of flexibility, strength and balance; and provide a hands-on opportunity for participants to learn about physical therapy.

Health Promotion

The Health Promotion program empowers and motivates athletes to make healthy lifestyle choices and provides fun ways to increase physical fitness.  Athletes receive information on topics such as tobacco avoidance, sun safety and skin care. The program also provides some health screenings for bone mineral density (BMD) measurements.

Special Smiles

At a Special Smiles screening, athletes get one-on-one oral hygiene instruction and a non-invasive oral examination by a licensed dental professional. Referrals for treatment are made to local dentists.
