Welcome to Special Olympics Oregon Jackson County

Jackson County is having a meeting and registration for athletes, their parents and support people. Your voice matters during this BIG change in our program!

4pm – 6pm on Saturday August 25th

First Baptist Church, 649 Crater Lake Ave in Medford

Jackson County is dedicated to continue athlete self accomplishment through sports. Our goal remains for the Fall 2018 and Winter 2019 seasons to offer opportunities for developing physical fitness, participate in a sharing of sport skills, and build friendships with Special Olympics athletes, coaches and the community.

IMPORTANT UPDATE FROM SPECIAL OLYMPICS OREGON ABOUT FALL AND WINTER SPORTS

Special Olympics Oregon continues to address the financial situation, meaning:

They are unable to provide Regional or State competitions for the 2018 Fall or 2019 Winter seasons.

Practices for Fall and Winter seasons have been suspended for sports that have facility costs. Jackson County has been paying for Fall Sports as follows:

$4 per athlete for Bowling, averaging $400 per practice
$100 for each Aquatics practice at the pool
$0 for Soccer and Volleyball practice fields and gyms

What does this mean for Jackson County Fall Sports?
We are unable to offer Bowling and Swimming this season
We will offer Soccer and Volleyball training programs
We will explore programs promoting fitness activities

What can you do?
Positively support your athlete(s) when telling your athlete(s) that there is no Bowling or Swimming this year
Encourage the opportunity to try a new sport this season
Attend the August 25th meeting (details above)

WHAT HAPPENED TO FIND SOOR IN THIS CHALLENGING FINANCIAL SITUATION?
SOOR did not turn away new athletes and continued to grow and offer a high level of training and competition
In doing so, debt was incurred that revenue and funding sources were not able to keep up with
At this time, the debt must be addressed as a priority in order for Special Olympics Oregon to continue to provide programs in the future

WHAT HAPPENED TO MONEY THAT WAS RAISED?
Funds raised provided a high level of programming and services throughout the state, that ultimately wasn’t sustainable due to revenue shortfalls

WHAT IS BEING DONE TO RETURN SOOR TO FINANCIAL STABILITY?
The current leadership is working directly with the Board of Directors, Special Olympics North America, experts in debt recovery, community leaders and past supporters of SOOR to build the recovery strategy
We can’t project a specific timeline for the recovery period, but are working diligently
