What is the role of a Special Olympics Oregon Coach?

Coaches are a critical component of Special Olympics Oregon's work. A Coach is a key figure in an athlete's life, providing the sports skills and spirit that define a true athlete. Coaches serve as role models and character builders, giving Special Olympics athletes awareness of their worth, ability, courage and capacity to grow and improve.

Special Olympics coaches also have a direct impact on athlete's lives by helping them acquire skills that can influence their abilities to obtain employment, succeed in school and achieve personal goals.

Coach Responsibilities

Volunteer coaches with Special Olympics Oregon come from all walks of life and backgrounds, and do not need prior experience- we provide the necessary training and resources. Time commitment for a coach is approximately 1-2 hours per week for 8-10 weeks, plus 1-2 days at a sports competition during a sports season.

Special Olympics Oregon Networking and Information Exchange for Families

Doug Trice, La Grande: Parents as well as athletes find a community through Special Olympics.

“Through Special Olympics, you meet other people who face the same challenges you do. You can’t do it alone sometimes. That support is vital,” says Special Olympics coach Doug Trice.
